Meeting #31: DC and the Crisis Brand
Aug 06, 2010 - 1:16 AM - by JohnLees
Hey Clubbers! Sorry for another lengthy delay in getting up a new column. Between getting ready for my trip to San Diego, and the stuff I needed to get caught up on upon returning, it took me ages to get around to even reading the material for this meeting, let alone writing about it. But here we are, and this meeting is a little different from the other meetings that have made up this block. ... [Read More]

ID:	9300 APE ENTERTAINMENT Co-founder/Co-publisher of Ape Entertainment, David Hedgecock, took the time to rap with us about their all-ages KiZoic line-up, and their new Dream works deal, including SHREK and PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR comics.

SEBASTIAN PICCIONE: SHREK has been a HUGE hit, how did the APE/DREAMWORKS collaboration come about?

David Hedgecock: We love the Shrek property and felt it was ripe for comics so we approached DWA about it (and a few other projects) and they agreed! Pretty simple, actually.

SEB: I know that these stories feed directly into the new SHREK film. Did DREAMWORKS tell you the kind of things they were looking for, or were you free to come at it however you wanted?

Hedgecock: We threw a ton of ideas at them and let them pick the ones they liked most. All of the basic ideas were generated by Ape.

SEB: Four films and various specials later, these characters have very distinct personalities and looks. Does that make them easier or more difficult to write/draw?

Hedgecock: Both. The wealth of information on the characters gave us lots of material to draw from but making sure we were staying true to the characters... [Read More]

Behind the Winter War, An Interview with Kurt Belcher

ID:	9249 After recently reading the new indie book "Winter War" by Kurt Belcher, I was really intrigued by the concept and wanted to here more about how the story came together. Check out my conversation with artist/writer below.

MICHAEL ROBERTS: For those readers that haven’t read our review of your comic, can you give us a quick summary of what Winter War is?

KURT BELCHER: "Winter War" is the true story of the conflict between Finland and the USSR in 1939 and 1940. Because Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland in late September happened just before the Winter War, it drew a lot of international attention away from this corner of battle. It was one of the opening salvos that would eventually become the Second World War. The story follows Finnish sniper Tero Toivanen through the war, as he tries to stay alive and deal with the horrors of war. Toivanen is loosely based on Simo Hayha, a real sniper who still holds the highest number of sniper kills in the record books. While the main character is my own creation, the war itself was very real, and provides a great ground for talking about history that is mostly unknown in the west.

MICHAEL: Is Winter War a miniseries, or do you plan on making this into an ongoing?

KURT: "Winter War" is definitely a mini-series. It's four issues and four... [Read More]

ID:	9201 I was fortunate enough to talk to one of my favorite comic artists, Emma Rios. Thanks to the internet, Spain is only a send key away, so Emma was able to fill me in about her recent stint on the STRANGE mini-series, the upcoming work on the FIRSETAR one-shot and the IRREDEEMABLE special, as well as a few other things.

SEBASTIAN PICCIONE: The STRANGE limited series with you and Mark Waid has just wrapped up. How did you become a part of that?

EMMA RIOS: Still not very sure about how it happened. I had the chance to meet Mark personally last year at Barcelona´s comic con. We had a friendly chat but didn´t talk about that. It seems that he pulled out some strings and Marvel wrote offering me the job. Of course, I almost fell from my chair when I read the email.

SEB: Between working with Mark Waid, and working on such a classic Marvel character as Doctor Strange, how much pressure did you feel you were under?

EMMA: It was so exciting.Of course I felt some pressure but decided not to think too much about that from the very beginning. It´s true that Stephen is an icon, but also there were a lot of people who worked on him. As I love the character I really enjoyed to have the possibility of being a small part of his long life.

SEB: After the mini... [Read More]

ID:	8506 So recently, I got a chance to talk to the lovely Vanessa Marshall. A professional voice-over artist for over 10 years, Ms. Marshall is probably a familiar voice to comic fans. After voicing the likes of Mary Jane in the Spectacular Spider-Man and Vertigo in Wolverine and the X-Men (as well as the Huntress in the Justice League Heroes video game), Ms. Marshall has recently completed what may be her highest profile comic book role yet: Wonder Woman in the animated movie Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. Ms. Marshall kindly took time off from some auditions to answer a few questions:

So, how did you get into voiceover work?

By accident! I was an on-camera actress and was not booking work at all. In 1998, I did a one woman show with 15 different characters, and a voice over agent (who attended the show) recommended that I look into voice over. She then invited me to read at her agency (as a kind of audition), and ultimately she decided to take me on as a client. I have been with her ever since. I was very lucky! After a year of classes, I started booking work. I was having so much fun that I gave up on-camera acting completely.

You play a lot of established characters in your body of work, with roots in various other mediums. Do you do research into the characters you... [Read More]

ID:	7355 I recently had the opportunity to talk with Jim Balent and Holly G from Broadsword Comics about Jim’s Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose, Holly’s School Bites and everything in between. After visiting their website it looks like Holly has been busy working on the overhaul and it’s looking great! With their down to earth demeanors and loyal fans, it’s no surprise that they are nominated for more of the Project Fanboy Awards this year.

Attachment 7345Scott Williams: Jim & Holly, thanks for taking the time to talk to Project Fanboy once again. So let’s start out with Tarot. It’s been going strong for about ten years now and will soon be hitting its sixtieth issue. Looking back over the years, would you have done anything different with Tarot?

Jim Balent: March 2010 will be our ten year anniversary for BROADSWORD COMICS and Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose. I don't think I would do anything different. The characters and stories took a natural evolution as the years went on.

I'm pleased how the books are turning out and I look forward to... [Read More]
